The Learning Commons has a policy of
delegating a Liaison Librarian to every teaching department within the
Institute. The Liaison Librarian's primary role is to communicate with
the academic staff in that department to assess their specific needs and to
provide assistance with and information about Learning
Commons services and issues.
Services provided by the
Liaison Librarian:
Information Services
• Prepare on request Bibliographic Reports for material held in the
Learning Commons.
• Prepare on request lists of
on-line information using the Information Common's databases
and the internet.
• Provide training on Learning Commons searching tools.
• Conduct Information Literacy training sessions.
• Provide up-to-date subject guides listing Learning Commons resources in specific subject areas.
Collection Development
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of information
resources within a given subject area/s.
• Select, evaluate and monitor web resources for the Learning Commons Web Links folder.
• Assist in developing, updating and maintaining the Learning Commons Collection Development Policy.
• Select new materials for purchase.
• Remove and discard irrelevant, outdated or damaged material.
Communication
• To work with teaching staff to identify and purchase resources to
strengthen specific areas of the collection and integrating
information
technology into the curriculum.
• Be open to suggestions and requests from members of liaison
departments regarding all types of Learning Commons services.
• To monitor the department's allocation for the Learning Commons
budget and to provide to the Department Managers up- to- date budget
information.
• To maintain the electronic and print Subject Guides that provide information about the resources and
services relevant to teaching faculties.
• To coordinate departmental purchase requests.
• To work with the designated contact staff from each Department (see Q:\Info Comms\Liaison\Department contacts 2009.doc)
who may provide support in the following areas
- 1. Promotion of Information Literacy sessions to
other staff in the Department
- 2. Suggesting relevant resources for the
Learning Commons’ collection
- 3. Informing other teaching staff when resources
become available for loan
- 4. Possibly alerting you to new courses/major
curriculum changes in the Department
- 5. Feedback on Subject Guides and web links
- 6. Participate in trials for new databases
