Client Charter

The Information Commons provides resources and facilities to support the learning needs of students and to support teaching staff of Holmesglen Institute. We provide a well resourced multi-media learning environment, for the benefit of our students.

The Information Commons is committed to the maintenance of appropriate print, audiovisual and electronic resources as well as to the identification and utilisation of appropriate new technologies to improve its customer service and enhance the flexible delivery of its services and resources.

INFORMATION COMMONS CLIENTS

The Information Commons clients are:

  • Students from recurrently funded courses and fee for service programs
  • Students and staff from other educational Institutions through the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Scheme
  • External borrowers, including community borrowers and Holmesglen graduates

AIMS OF THE INFORMATION COMMONS

The Information Commons aims to: 

  • Provide a range of electronic and print-based resources that best reflect the educational and research needs of Information Commons clients
  • Actively contribute to the education process, so that courses which are developed and/or delivered at Holmesglen are capitalising on the range and depth of information resources and services provided through the Information Commons
  • Ensure that the appropriate information technology infrastructure is provided and functional, in order that electronic information resources, application software and multi-media learning packages are made available both within the Information Commons and remotely. Technology, within this context should be an enabler and not the determinant for decision making.
  • Promote an awareness of the importance of information resources and services to the effective delivery of education within Holmesglen.

In order to achieve these aims the following charter and Code of conduct has been established for the Information Commons.

  1. Provide a high quality of Information and related services to students and staff of the Institute in support of the course teaching and learning requirements of students and staff of the Institute.

Ensure that you are aware of the services, resources, policies and procedures of the Information Commons so that you can best utilise this resource.

  1. Provide all students and staff of the Institute with opportunities to develop appropriate research skills to enable them to efficiently access and use information resources available to them through the Information Commons and associated information services, including; Print and Electronic data basis, the Internet, and other information sources.

Make use of opportunities to develop your Information research skills by participating in Information Commons research training programs relevant to your needs and asking for staff assistance when required. Reinforcing those skills by trying to locate resources yourself wherever possible.

  1. Provide equality of access to the Information Commons collections, other resources and services to all users irrespective of physical or other handicaps, where the student resides or where the staff member teaches.

Return material you borrow by the due date. Recognise that Information Commons services and resources are shared across the whole of the Holmesglen community and are also utilised by others. Be reasonable in your request for services and support.

  1. Ensure that the Information Commons collections have key electronic, print and audiovisual resources on required reading lists and the majority of material identified as additional reading.

Teaching staff to supply the Information Commons staff with copies of course reading lists, order requests, and counter reserve requests in time to allow resources to be made available.

  1. Maintain an Information Commons environment and facilities, including equipment resources, that:

i) ensures the effective use of the facilities, services and resources of the Information Commons,

ii) encourages study and provides a pleasant study environment. Note:children are welcome to accompany adult carers using the facilities but must not be left unattended or unsupervised in the Information Commons. The use by children of PCs and other electronic equipment in the Information Commons is strictly prohibited.

iii) enhances the teaching and learning environment of the Information Commons.

Be considerate of others needs in your behaviour in the Information Commons. Help to maintain a quiet environment. Treat Information Commons resources and facilities with care. Do not eat, drink or use mobile phones in the Information Commons.
