Inter-Library Loan FAQ
The service of Inter-Library Loans is provided by the Information Commons (campus wide)
to those clients who require material not available from the Information Commons,
for work and course related purposes.
Resources can be requested on Inter-Library Loan by teaching staff (free of charge)
and normally takes up to 2 weeks to obtain from other libraries. To contact the
Inter Library Loan Officer, Angela Newland or Anne Gleason,
phone (03)9209 5726 or email
angela_n@holmesglen.vic.edu.au
Note: Students are normally expected to go to their respective library
holding the resources to borrow or photocopy the information they
require. The students can use the CAVAL borrowing system for this
purpose. Inter-Library-Loan requests can however, be made by students,
if they are prepared to pay all current ILL charges up front.
If the loan is available from a TAFE, students are not required
to pay any charges as long as the request is for course related work.
Inter-Library Loan Policies
Materials are loaned to the Information Commons Holmesglen Institute of
TAFE as a courtesy, and their conditions of use, including due
dates, must be respected. The clients who need Inter-Library Loan
materials for a longer period than the time allotted should discuss
this matter with the Inter library Loan Officer. The Inter-Library
Loan Officer may be able to renew the loan (in order to extend
the due date) or borrow another copy of the item from a different
library. Failure to return Inter-Library Loan materials on time
jeopardizes the Information Commons liaisons with other libraries
and could adversely affect other clients needing Inter-Library
Loan services. Users who return Inter-Library Loan materials late
will be served with a formal warning. Users who subsequently return
Inter-Library Loan materials late will lose Inter-Library Loan
privileges.
Note: If staff require more than three titles through Inter Library
Loan and all items are available from CAVAL libraries, then it is recommended
that staff obtain a CAVAL card from the Information Commons enabling them to
pick up the items personally.
Videos / Films from other libraries
Videos and films held by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI),
National Film Library and the Occupational Health and Safety Library, and other
appropriate tertiary libraries, may be booked through the Information Commons.
Requests should be made as early as possible, as many titles are in high demand.
Staff can search the website www.acmi.net.au
under the heading Collections and
then contact the Inter Library Loans Officer at Moorabbin Information Commons
via email or telephone to order videos and DVD’s.
(Note: While the Information Commons will pay return freight on staff
Inter-Library Loans by rail or post, charges for transport by
commercial couriers will be passed on to the teaching department.)

Inter-Library Loan FAQ
Who may use the inter-library loan service?
If you are a current Holmesglen staff member you may submit requests
for inter-library loans to obtain materials that are unavailable
in the Information Commons. Please see the Note above regarding
the students.
Can I use the inter-library loan service to borrow any kind
of materials ?
No. Books and journal articles are the most commonly borrowed
items. (With regard to journal articles, ILL officer generally
requests the photocopies of the articles from the lending library
rather than the original journal issues.) Materials from non-circulating
collections cannot be borrowed from any library.
May I request items that are missing from the Information Commons
collection?
If the item cannot be found in the Information Commons collection,
you may request an inter-library loan.
Do I have to pay for inter-library loans?
This is a free service, as long as the number of requests are
not excessive. This service is purely for work related research
and business only and cannot be used for personal use.
How do I know when the item is available?
Usually it takes two to four weeks for an item to arrive from a lending
library. When the item arrives, you will be notified by
phone or email. Incoming items may be picked up at the Information
Services/Circulation Desk during opening hours. You will be asked
to sign that you have received the item.
How long it takes to receive items through inter-library loan?
It takes about two to four weeks to find, request and receive
the item from the participating library. Some items are more difficult
to obtain and may take longer.
What is the loan period for inter-library loans?
Loan periods are determined by the lending library and can vary.
A typical loan period is three weeks.
Where do I return my loan?
Loans must be returned at the Information Services/Circulation Desk.
